Write Your Own Mad Libs Story for Kids
Write your own Mad Libs story for a friend. Write a short story first, blank out six words and label each one, then let a partner choose new words without seeing your story.
Make your story in four steps
- Write a short story of your own, three or four sentences long.
- Pick six words to blank out: a noun, a plural noun, a verb, an adjective, a place and a silly sound.
- Rewrite the story on the lines below with a numbered blank for each word, labelled with its word type.
- Fold the story away. Your partner fills the word list, then you read the story aloud with their words.
One made-up example
Story first: At the bakery, a giggling dinosaur likes to juggle seven pancakes and yell “Boing!”
With blanks: At the 5. place, a 4. adjective 1. noun likes to 3. verb seven 2. plural noun and yell “6. silly sound!”
Each blank keeps the same number as its word type in the template below, so a partner who never saw the story fills the list as 1 pickle, 2 trumpets, 3 tickle, 4 fuzzy, 5 library and 6 splat: At the library, a fuzzy pickle likes to tickle seven trumpets and yell “Splat!”
This sentence is made up for this page and is not from a published story.

- 1. Noun
- 2. Plural noun
- 3. Verb
- 4. Adjective
- 5. Place
- 6. Silly sound
Read it aloud
Read your story out loud, swapping in your partner's word every time you reach a numbered blank. If a sentence stops making sense, check that each blank's label matches the job its word had in your first draft.
