Origami: Masu Box (Traditional Box)

A classic, kid-friendly origami project — no scissors or glue needed, just one square sheet of paper. Print this page for step-by-step folding instructions.

  1. Step 1 diagramStart with a square sheet of paper, colored side down. Fold it in half top to bottom, then unfold; fold it in half side to side, then unfold — you now have a + crease running through the center both ways.
  2. Step 2 diagramFold each of the four corners in to meet the center point, forming a smaller square made of four triangular flaps (this is sometimes called a "blintz fold").
  3. Step 3 diagramUnfold just the top and bottom corners back out flat, leaving the left and right corners still folded in to the center.
  4. Step 4 diagramFold the top and bottom edges in so they meet the center line — these folds will become the box’s two side walls when it opens up.
  5. Step 5 diagramFold the left and right corners (still folded in from step 2) up and over so each one tucks behind the wall you just made on its side, locking them in place.
  6. Step 6 diagramGently pull the four walls upward and square off the base with your fingers — you now have an open box that can hold small treasures like paper clips or beads.
