Understanding Decimals and Fractions

Decimals are another way of writing fractions with denominators of 10 or 100:

  • Tenths: 1/10 = 0.1. A bar with 10 parts, where each part is one tenth.
  • Hundredths: 1/100 = 0.01. A 10×10 grid with 100 squares, where each square is one hundredth.
  • Equivalence: 1 tenth equals 10 hundredths (1/10 = 10/100, or 0.1 = 0.10). Therefore, 4/10 = 40/100.
  • Comparing decimals: Compare by place value from left to right. 0.7 (70 hundredths) is greater than 0.58 (58 hundredths).
