Divide Unit Fractions and Whole Numbers
Print 5th grade unit fraction division worksheets: split fraction bars to divide 1/b by a whole number, and count unit fractions in wholes.
Worksheet version 1 of 12. The answer key matches the current version.
Problems 1-3: the striped part is a unit fraction of the bar. Split it into equal pieces and name one piece. Problems 4-6: each bar is one whole. Count the unit-fraction parts. Check with multiplication.
1. Split the striped 1/2 into 3 equal pieces. What fraction of the whole bar is one piece?
1/2 ÷ 3 = ___/___
Check: ___/___ × 3 = 1/2
2. Split the striped 1/3 into 2 equal pieces. What fraction of the whole bar is one piece?
1/3 ÷ 2 = ___/___
Check: ___/___ × 2 = 1/3
3. Draw lines to split the striped 1/4 into 2 equal pieces. What fraction of the whole bar is one piece?
1/4 ÷ 2 = ___/___
Check: ___/___ × 2 = 1/4
4. How many 1/3 parts are in 2 wholes?
2 ÷ 1/3 = ___
Check: ___ × 1/3 = 2
5. How many 1/2 parts are in 3 wholes?
3 ÷ 1/2 = ___
Check: ___ × 1/2 = 3
6. Split each bar into 4 equal parts. How many 1/4 parts are in 2 wholes?
2 ÷ 1/4 = ___
Check: ___ × 1/4 = 2
About this worksheet
Dividing a unit fraction by a whole number shares it into equal pieces: 1/b ÷ n splits one part into n pieces, and splitting every part the same way makes b × n pieces in the whole, so 1/b ÷ n = 1/(b × n). Dividing a whole number by a unit fraction asks how many 1/b parts fit: each whole holds b of them, so n ÷ 1/b = n × b. Multiplication checks both: 1/(b × n) × n = 1/b and (n × b) × 1/b = n.
