Add Fractions with Unlike Denominators
Print 5th grade fraction worksheets: rewrite fractions with a common denominator on aligned fraction bars, then add unlike denominators.
Worksheet version 1 of 12. The answer key matches the current version.
All bars are the same whole. Bar C is split into parts that fit both A and B. Shade A then B on C, and fill in the blanks.
1. Shade A then B on C.
1/2 + 1/3 = ___/6 + ___/6 = ___/6
2. Shade A then B on C.
1/4 + 2/3 = ___/12 + ___/12 = ___/12
3. Shade A then B on C.
1/2 + 1/4 = ___/4 + ___/4 = ___/4
4. Shade A then B on C.
2/5 + 1/2 = ___/10 + ___/10 = ___/10
5. Find a common denominator. Draw bar C if it helps.
1/6 + 1/4 = ___/___ + ___/___ = ___/___
6. Find a common denominator. Draw bar C if it helps.
1/3 + 1/6 = ___/___ + ___/___ = ___/___
About this worksheet
Fractions with different denominators have parts of different sizes, so they cannot be added straight away. Rewrite both as equivalent fractions with a common denominator (a number both denominators divide into), then add the numerators. The least common denominator keeps the numbers small, but any common denominator gives an equivalent answer.
