Multiply Fractions with Area Models
Print 5th grade fraction multiplication worksheets: shade area models and tile rectangles with fractional sides to multiply fractions.
Worksheet version 1 of 12. The answer key matches the current version.
Problems 1-4: the square is one whole. Dot the rows and count the parts that are striped and dotted. Problems 5-6: tile the rectangle and find its area in square units.
1. Dot 1/3 of the rows. What part of the square is striped and dotted?
1/2 × 1/3 = ___/___
2. Dot 3/4 of the rows. What part of the square is striped and dotted?
2/3 × 3/4 = ___/___
3. Dot 1/2 of the rows. What part of the square is striped and dotted?
3/4 × 1/2 = ___/___
4. Dot 2/5 of the rows. What part of the square is striped and dotted?
1/3 × 2/5 = ___/___
5. Each tile is 1/6 square unit. Count the tiles to find the area.
Area = 3/2 × 2/3 = ___/___ square unit
6. Draw tiles 1/2 unit wide and 1/2 unit tall. Find the area.
Area = 5/2 × 1/2 = ___/___ square units
About this worksheet
To find a/b × c/d, split one whole into b × d equal parts. Taking c/d of a/b covers a × c of those parts, so a/b × c/d = (a × c)/(b × d). The same rule finds the area of a rectangle with fractional sides: tiles 1/b unit wide and 1/d unit tall each cover 1/(b × d) of a square unit, and a × c of them cover the rectangle.
