How to Multiply a Whole Number by a Fraction

Multiplying a whole number by a fraction is repeated addition of that fraction:

  • Unit fractions: 4 × (1/5) means 4 copies of 1/5 added together: 1/5 + 1/5 + 1/5 + 1/5 = 4/5.
  • Non-unit fractions: 3 × (2/7) = 3 × 2 sevenths = 6/7. Multiply the whole number by the numerator, while the denominator stays the same.
  • Products greater than 1: 4 × (2/3) = 8/3. Since 8 ÷ 3 = 2 with remainder 2, 8/3 can also be written as 2 2/3.
  • Decomposing: Every fraction a/b is a multiple of its unit fraction: a/b = a × (1/b).
