How to Solve Checkers Puzzles for Kids
In checkers, look for a jump before making an ordinary diagonal step. If one of your pieces can jump over an opponent into an empty square, you must capture. Black moves down the board in this example.
Find the one legal jump
On this original board, Black has two pieces marked B and Red has one marked R. The Black piece on row 3, column 6 sits diagonally above Red on row 4, column 5. The square beyond Red is empty.
Jump from row 3, column 6 over Red on row 4, column 5, and land on row 5, column 4. Remove the Red piece you jumped. The other Black piece cannot take an ordinary step this turn: a capture is available, so this jump is the only legal move.
Solve a puzzle on the board
- Read whose turn it is. Select a piece with a highlighted square, then choose a highlighted landing square. If another jump is available, continue with that piece.
- Reveal answer shows the solution and Why It Works explanation. Reset returns to the starting position so you can try again.
- Print opens a separate page with the starting position and prompt, followed by an Answer Key with the move path and explanation.
