How to Solve Crosswords for Kids
A crossword uses clues to fill a grid of letters. A number marks where a word starts. Across means write from left to right; Down means write from top to bottom. A black square is not part of a word.
Solve three words together
Read the clue number and direction before writing. Start with 1 Across: a pet that purrs is CAT. Put C in square 1 and continue right with A, then T.
Across
1. A pet that purrs (3 letters): CAT
3. A warm drink made from leaves (3 letters): TEA
Down
2. A playing card marked A (3 letters): ACE
The A in CAT is also the first letter of 2 Down, ACE. The E at the end of ACE is the middle letter of 3 Across, TEA. Shared squares must show the same letter for both words.
Your crossword checklist
- Find the clue number on the grid, then check whether it says Across or Down.
- Use the clue and number of squares to guess a word; check shared letters against crossing words.
- On this site, use Show answers to see filled letters, or choose whether to Include answers at the bottom before pressing Print. The puzzle prints from the same page.
