How to Play 4x4 Sudoku for Kids
Sudoku is a number puzzle, not a math test. On a 4x4 grid, fill the empty cells using 1, 2, 3 and 4. You do not need to add or subtract. In shape Sudoku, use each of the four shapes once instead; the rules are the same.
Three places to check
- Row: each line across needs 1, 2, 3 and 4 once.
- Column: each line down needs 1, 2, 3 and 4 once.
- Box: each thick-outlined 2x2 square needs 1, 2, 3 and 4 once.
The numbers already printed in a puzzle are clues: leave them where they are.
Try one missing cell
Look at row 3, column 3. Its row already has 2, 1 and 3. Its column has 3, 1 and 2; its bottom-right box has 3, 2 and 1. Only 4 is missing, so write 4 in that cell.
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 3 | 4 | 1 | 2 |
| 2 | 1 | ? | 3 |
| 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 |
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 3 | 4 | 1 | 2 |
| 2 | 1 | 4 | 3 |
| 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 |
The darker lines separate the four 2x2 boxes; the question mark shows the cell to solve.
Your practice checklist
- Find a row, column or box with just one empty cell.
- Check which number is missing in all three places.
- Fill it in, then repeat. If you get stuck, look for a different empty cell.
