Check each call

  1. B3: Miss. row B is above the ship.
  2. C3: Hit. row C, column 3 is the middle ship square.
  3. E4: Miss. row E is below the ship.

Talk it through

Ask the child to point to a row before moving across to a column. The final call is their own: check it against C2-C4, not against a real opponent's board. A hit means the chosen square is part of the secret ship; a miss means it is not.
